Overview

General Description

Anterior face of the obturaculum of an adult has a thick crust, up to 2mm thick, with central, slightly curved, spike-like structures extending from between obturacular halves. The 'spike-structure' is laterally compressed with a surface covered in small spines, apparently formed by the medial surfaces of the obturacular halves. Laminar 'growth lines' are visible in transverse sections. There are two kinds of filaments associated with the obturaculum, which are restricted to two distinct regions. Distally, there are larger, sensory filaments that lack pinnules, which are fused into about 5 pairs of lamellae at about 50% obturacular length. The remainder of the proximal obturacular region has up to 63 pairs of lamellae composed of smaller branchial filaments with pinnules. The distal sides of the obturacular regions are bare. The obturaculum is laterally compressed at the base, somewhat oval in transverse section and lacking a dorsal groove but with a ventral ridge. There is a single medial excretory pore opening from a conspicuous, darkly pigmented, dorsal medial ridge at the base of the obturaculum. The anterior margin of the vestimentum is short, and does not form an extensive sheath around the base of the obturaculum. Ciliated grooves are sometimes present on the dorsal surface of the vestimentum, and they are straight, parallel or slightly converging anteriorly. The posteroventral margin of the vestimentum is entire. The opisthosome is unknown. The tube is smooth, dark green-brown, and with no collars. It is tapering, and is extremely hard and rigid.
